Beryllium
Supply Chain
Beryllium Supply Chain: From Mine to Market
The beryllium supply chain is the most concentrated of almost any critical mineral, with Materion Corporation controlling approximately 65% of global primary production from its Spor Mountain mine in Utah. Bertrandite ore is leached with sulfuric acid to produce beryllium hydroxide, which is then processed into metal, alloys, and ceramics at Materions Ohio facilities. Kazakhstan (Ulba Metallurgical Plant) is the other significant processor, working from stockpiled beryl concentrates. China has limited beryllium capabilities. The extreme toxicity of beryllium dust (causing chronic beryllium disease) imposes stringent workplace safety requirements and high barriers to entry. The entire global market is only ~260 tonnes/year, making it one of the smallest critical mineral markets by volume.

Production Geography
Global Beryllium production is led by United States, which accounts for approximately 65% of world output, followed by China. The full list of major producing nations includes United States, China, Mozambique, Brazil. This geographic concentration means that disruptions in key producing regions can have outsized impacts on global supply and pricing.
Extraction Methods
Beryllium is extracted using the following primary methods:
- Open-pit mining
- Underground mining
Processing and Intermediate Products
Beryllium is primarily sourced from Bertrandite (Be4Si2O7(OH)2), Beryl (Be3Al2Si6O18). After extraction, the raw material undergoes multiple processing steps including beneficiation, chemical treatment, and refining to reach the purity levels required by downstream industries. Typical ore grades range from 0.3-2% BeO.
Key Supply Chain Participants
The Beryllium supply chain involves these major companies:
Materion Corporation
Worlds leading integrated beryllium company, operating the only US beryllium mine (Spor Mountain, Utah) and processing facilities in Ohio and Pennsylvania
Ulba Metallurgical Plant
Major beryllium processor owned by Kazatomprom, producing beryllium products primarily from stockpiled beryl concentrates
NGK Insulators
Produces beryllium copper alloys and beryllia ceramics for electronics applications
IBC Advanced Alloys
Specialty beryllium-aluminum alloy producer for defense and aerospace applications
Supply Chain Vulnerabilities
Key vulnerabilities in the Beryllium supply chain include concentration of 65% of production in United States, limited processing capacity diversification, and long lead times for new mining projects. The high supply risk rating reflects the severity of these concentration risks and the difficulty of rapidly establishing alternative supply sources.
