Cesium
Supply Chain
Cesium Supply Chain: From Mine to Market
The cesium supply chain is the most concentrated of any element. Virtually all commercial cesium comes from three pollucite deposits: Tanco mine in Canada, Bikita in Zimbabwe, and smaller deposits in Namibia. Sinomine Resource Group (China) acquired both Tanco and Bikita in 2019-2020, giving it control of the vast majority of global cesium supply. Pollucite ore is processed through acid digestion to produce cesium chloride or cesium formate. The dominant application, cesium formate drilling fluid, is unique because the fluid is recycled rather than consumed, meaning the stock of cesium in circulation serves the market over many years. Atomic clock and electronics applications require much smaller but ultra-high-purity cesium quantities.

Production Geography
Global Cesium production is led by Canada, which accounts for approximately 82% of world output, followed by Australia. The full list of major producing nations includes Canada, Australia, Namibia. This geographic concentration means that disruptions in key producing regions can have outsized impacts on global supply and pricing.
Extraction Methods
Cesium is extracted using the following primary methods:
- Open-pit mining
- Underground mining
Processing and Intermediate Products
Cesium is primarily sourced from Pollucite ((Cs,Na)2Al2Si4O12·nH2O). After extraction, the raw material undergoes multiple processing steps including beneficiation, chemical treatment, and refining to reach the purity levels required by downstream industries. Typical ore grades range from 20-32% Cs2O.
Key Supply Chain Participants
The Cesium supply chain involves these major companies:
Sinomine Resource Group
Acquired the Tanco mine in Manitoba, Canada in 2019, securing control of one of only three significant pollucite deposits globally
Cabot Corporation (historical)
Historically dominant in cesium formate drilling fluids through its Specialty Fluids division; sold cesium business to Sinomine in 2019
Avalon Advanced Materials
Holds cesium-rich mineral properties in Canada as part of its critical minerals portfolio
Supply Chain Vulnerabilities
Key vulnerabilities in the Cesium supply chain include concentration of 82% of production in Canada, limited processing capacity diversification, and long lead times for new mining projects. The high supply risk rating reflects the severity of these concentration risks and the difficulty of rapidly establishing alternative supply sources.
