Gallium Supply Chain: From Mine to Market
The gallium supply chain represents perhaps the most extreme example of Chinese dominance in critical minerals. China produces ~98% of primary gallium, extracted as a byproduct from Bayer process liquor during alumina refining. Globally, only about 10% of the gallium contained in bauxite is actually recovered; the remainder is discarded in red mud waste. This means potential supply exists but extraction infrastructure has been built almost exclusively in China. After primary extraction, gallium is refined to 4N (99.99%) purity for general use and zone-refined to 7N+ (99.99999%) purity for semiconductor applications. The main consumption pathway runs through compound semiconductor wafer fabrication (GaAs, GaN), predominantly in Japan, Taiwan, China, and the US. Chinas 2023 export controls exposed the complete absence of non-Chinese primary gallium supply and triggered emergency programs to install extraction capability at Western alumina refineries.

Production Geography
Global Gallium production is led by China, which accounts for approximately 98% of world output, followed by Japan. The full list of major producing nations includes China, Japan, South Korea, Russia. This geographic concentration means that disruptions in key producing regions can have outsized impacts on global supply and pricing.
Extraction Methods
Gallium is extracted using the following primary methods:
- Byproduct of aluminum (bauxite) processing
- Byproduct of zinc refining
Processing and Intermediate Products
Gallium is primarily sourced from Extracted from Bayer process liquor (bauxite), Extracted from zinc processing residues. After extraction, the raw material undergoes multiple processing steps including beneficiation, chemical treatment, and refining to reach the purity levels required by downstream industries. Typical ore grades range from Byproduct - 30-80 ppm in bauxite.
Key Supply Chain Participants
The Gallium supply chain involves these major companies:
China Aluminum Corporation (Chinalco)
Worlds largest aluminum company and leading primary gallium producer through extraction from Bayer liquor at its alumina refineries
AXT Inc
Major producer of GaAs, InP, and GaSb compound semiconductor substrates
Freiberger Compound Materials
European GaAs wafer manufacturer for wireless, optoelectronic, and solar applications
Sumitomo Electric
Major Japanese compound semiconductor wafer producer for GaAs and GaN
Supply Chain Vulnerabilities
Key vulnerabilities in the Gallium supply chain include concentration of 98% of production in China, limited processing capacity diversification, and long lead times for new mining projects. The high supply risk rating reflects the severity of these concentration risks and the difficulty of rapidly establishing alternative supply sources.
