Holmium possesses the highest magnetic moment of any naturally occurring element, making it useful in creating extremely powerful magnetic fields. Holmium lasers are widely used in medical procedures including lithotripsy and eye surgery. It is one of the least abundant rare earth elements and is produced exclusively as a co-product of other rare earth mining.
