Holmium
Supply Chain
Holmium Supply Chain: From Mine to Market
Holmium follows the standard rare earth supply chain with China producing ~95% of global output. It is found in small quantities in both ion-adsorption clays and monazite/xenotime ores. Separation requires many stages of solvent extraction due to holmiums similarity to neighboring lanthanides (dysprosium, erbium). Global production is only ~15 tonnes/year. The dominant commercial application is Ho:YAG (holmium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet) medical lasers, used primarily for kidney stone lithotripsy and prostate surgery (HoLEP procedure). Holmium possesses the highest magnetic moment of any naturally occurring element (10.6 Bohr magnetons), making it valuable for specialized magnetic research and potentially for high-field magnet pole pieces.

Production Geography
Global Holmium production is led by China, which accounts for approximately 95% of world output, followed by Myanmar. The full list of major producing nations includes China, Myanmar, Australia. This geographic concentration means that disruptions in key producing regions can have outsized impacts on global supply and pricing.
Extraction Methods
Holmium is extracted using the following primary methods:
- Byproduct of rare earth mining
- Ion-adsorption clay leaching
Processing and Intermediate Products
Holmium is primarily sourced from Ion-adsorption clays, Monazite, Xenotime. After extraction, the raw material undergoes multiple processing steps including beneficiation, chemical treatment, and refining to reach the purity levels required by downstream industries. Typical ore grades range from 0.005-0.01% Ho2O3.
Key Supply Chain Participants
The Holmium supply chain involves these major companies:
China Southern Rare Earth Group
Primary global source of separated holmium from ion-adsorption clay processing
Lumenis
Leading medical laser company using Ho:YAG lasers for urology and other surgical applications
Boston Scientific
Major medical device company marketing holmium laser lithotripsy systems for kidney stone treatment
Olympus
Manufactures holmium laser systems for urological surgical procedures
Supply Chain Vulnerabilities
Key vulnerabilities in the Holmium supply chain include concentration of 95% of production in China, limited processing capacity diversification, and long lead times for new mining projects. The high supply risk rating reflects the severity of these concentration risks and the difficulty of rapidly establishing alternative supply sources.
