Applications and End-Uses for Indium

Indium (In) is a high-criticality technology metal with annual global production of approximately 900 tonnes. Indium is a soft, silvery technology metal primarily used as indium tin oxide, the transparent conductive coating essential for virtually all touchscreens, flat panel displays, and thin-film solar cells. It is produced almost entirely as a byproduct of zinc refining. Supply is highly concentrated in China, and there are currently no effective substitutes for ITO in display applications.

Key Applications

The primary end-uses of Indium span multiple sectors. The following applications represent the most significant sources of global demand:

  • Indium tin oxide (ITO) for touchscreens - Indium is valued in indium tin oxide (ito) for touchscreens for its unique physical and chemical properties that are difficult to replicate with alternative materials.
  • Flat panel displays - Indium is valued in flat panel displays for its unique physical and chemical properties that are difficult to replicate with alternative materials.
  • Thin-film solar cells - Indium is valued in thin-film solar cells for its unique physical and chemical properties that are difficult to replicate with alternative materials.
  • Solders and alloys - Key alternatives include Tin-bismuth alloys. Tin-bismuth can achieve similar low melting points but with more brittle joints
  • Semiconductors - Key alternatives include GaAs, silicon photonics. InP is essential for 1310/1550nm wavelength devices used in fiber optics; silicon photonics is emerging but cannot replicate InPs direct bandgap for laser sources
