Iridium Supply Chain: From Mine to Market

Iridium has the most supply-constrained value chain of any industrial metal. Total global production is only ~7.5 tonnes/year, entirely as a co-product of platinum and palladium mining in South Africa (~85%), Zimbabwe, and Russia. Iridium is concentrated in the base metal refinery residues of PGM processing and requires additional separation steps. South Africas Bushveld Complex operations (Anglo American Platinum, Impala, Sibanye-Stillwater) are the dominant source. The critical supply chain tension is between iridiums essential role as the anode catalyst in PEM electrolyzers for green hydrogen production and the physically limited supply. If all announced hydrogen electrolyzer projects were built, iridium demand could exceed annual production several times over. This has made iridium loading reduction the top research priority for the hydrogen electrolyzer industry.

Production Geography

Global Iridium production is led by South Africa, which accounts for approximately 85% of world output, followed by Zimbabwe. The full list of major producing nations includes South Africa, Zimbabwe, Russia, Canada. This geographic concentration means that disruptions in key producing regions can have outsized impacts on global supply and pricing.

Extraction Methods

Iridium is extracted using the following primary methods:

  • Byproduct of platinum/palladium mining
  • Recovery from recycled autocatalysts

Processing and Intermediate Products

Iridium is primarily sourced from Merensky Reef, UG2 Chromitite, Platreef (all in Bushveld Complex). After extraction, the raw material undergoes multiple processing steps including beneficiation, chemical treatment, and refining to reach the purity levels required by downstream industries. Typical ore grades range from Byproduct - ~0.06 g/t in PGM ores.

Key Supply Chain Participants

The Iridium supply chain involves these major companies:

Anglo American Platinum

Producer AMS.JO
South Africa

Worlds largest primary PGM producer; major source of iridium as a co-product from Bushveld Complex operations

Impala Platinum (Implats)

Producer IMP.JO
South Africa

Second-largest PGM producer globally; produces iridium from its South African and Zimbabwean operations

Sibanye-Stillwater

Producer SSW.JO
South Africa

Major PGM and gold producer; iridium co-product from Bushveld Complex PGM mines

Johnson Matthey

Refiner/Recycler JMAT.L
United Kingdom

Major PGM refiner and recycler; publishes daily iridium pricing; key supplier of iridium catalysts for electrolyzers

Supply Chain Vulnerabilities

Key vulnerabilities in the Iridium supply chain include concentration of 85% of production in South Africa, limited processing capacity diversification, and long lead times for new mining projects. The high supply risk rating reflects the severity of these concentration risks and the difficulty of rapidly establishing alternative supply sources.
