Metallurgical Coal
Supply Chain
Metallurgical Coal Supply Chain: From Mine to Market
Australia is the worlds largest seaborne met coal exporter (~55% of international trade), primarily from Queenslands Bowen Basin. Canada (Elk Valley, BC), the US (Appalachia, Alabama), Russia, and Mozambique are other significant exporters. Met coal is washed and beneficiated at the mine, then transported by rail to export ports (Dalrymple Bay, Gladstone in Australia; Roberts Bank in Canada). The coal is shipped to steelmakers in Japan, South Korea, India, and Europe for conversion to coke in coke ovens. Coke serves as both fuel and chemical reductant in blast furnaces. The long-term outlook is challenged by green steel technology (H2-DRI), but blast furnace capacity has 30-50 year lifespans, ensuring met coal demand persists for decades even as the transition progresses.

Production Geography
Global Metallurgical Coal production is led by Australia, which accounts for approximately 25% of world output, followed by United States. The full list of major producing nations includes Australia, United States, Canada, Russia, China. This geographic concentration means that disruptions in key producing regions can have outsized impacts on global supply and pricing.
Extraction Methods
Metallurgical Coal is extracted using the following primary methods:
- Underground longwall mining
- Open-pit/strip mining
Processing and Intermediate Products
Metallurgical Coal is primarily sourced from Hard coking coal (HCC), Semi-soft coking coal (SSCC), Pulverized coal injection (PCI). After extraction, the raw material undergoes multiple processing steps including beneficiation, chemical treatment, and refining to reach the purity levels required by downstream industries. Typical ore grades range from N/A (coal quality measured by CSR, fluidity, volatile matter).
Key Supply Chain Participants
The Metallurgical Coal supply chain involves these major companies:
BHP
Worlds largest seaborne met coal exporter; operates BHP Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) mines in Queenslands Bowen Basin
Glencore
Major met coal producer in Australia and globally; also the largest physical commodity trading house
Teck Resources
Sold its steelmaking coal business to Glencore in 2024; historically Canadas largest met coal producer from Elk Valley, BC operations
Anglo American
Major met coal producer from Queensland, Australia operations
Supply Chain Vulnerabilities
Key vulnerabilities in the Metallurgical Coal supply chain include concentration of 25% of production in Australia, limited processing capacity diversification, and long lead times for new mining projects. Monitoring these vulnerabilities remains important for supply chain resilience planning.
