Palladium
Supply Chain
Palladium Supply Chain: From Mine to Market
Russia (Nornickel, ~40%) and South Africa (~35%) together dominate palladium supply. Russian palladium comes from the Norilsk-Talnakh massive sulfide deposits in Arctic Siberia, while South African palladium is a co-product of platinum mining from the Bushveld Complex. The US Stillwater mine (Sibanye-Stillwater) is the only other primary source. Approximately 80% of palladium demand goes to automotive catalytic converters for gasoline engines, where it catalyzes the conversion of CO, hydrocarbons, and NOx to less harmful emissions. Recycling of spent automotive catalysts provides ~25% of supply and is growing as older palladium-rich catalysts reach end of life. The fundamental long-term supply chain risk for palladium is the opposite of most critical minerals: demand destruction from EV adoption rather than supply shortage.

Production Geography
Global Palladium production is led by Russia, which accounts for approximately 40% of world output, followed by South Africa. The full list of major producing nations includes Russia, South Africa, Canada, United States, Zimbabwe. This geographic concentration means that disruptions in key producing regions can have outsized impacts on global supply and pricing.
Extraction Methods
Palladium is extracted using the following primary methods:
- Underground mining (narrow reef)
- Open-pit mining (Platreef)
Processing and Intermediate Products
Palladium is primarily sourced from Merensky Reef, UG2 Chromitite, Platreef, Stillwater sulfides, Norilsk sulfides. After extraction, the raw material undergoes multiple processing steps including beneficiation, chemical treatment, and refining to reach the purity levels required by downstream industries. Typical ore grades range from 2-8 g/t PGM (Pd-rich in Stillwater and Norilsk).
Key Supply Chain Participants
The Palladium supply chain involves these major companies:
Nornickel
Worlds largest palladium producer from Norilsk-Talnakh sulfide deposits in Arctic Siberia; produces ~40% of global supply
Anglo American Platinum
Largest South African PGM producer; palladium is a significant co-product alongside platinum from Bushveld operations
Impala Platinum
Major PGM producer; palladium output from South African and Zimbabwean operations
Sibanye-Stillwater
Operates the Stillwater mine in Montana, USA (only US PGM mine) and major South African PGM operations; significant palladium producer
Supply Chain Vulnerabilities
Key vulnerabilities in the Palladium supply chain include concentration of 40% of production in Russia, limited processing capacity diversification, and long lead times for new mining projects. The high supply risk rating reflects the severity of these concentration risks and the difficulty of rapidly establishing alternative supply sources.
