Phosphate Supply Chain: From Mine to Market
China is the largest phosphate rock producer (~24%) but consumes most domestically. Morocco (OCP Group) controls ~70% of global reserves and is the largest exporter. The US (Mosaic) and Russia (PhosAgro) are other major producers. Phosphate rock is beneficiated and processed into phosphoric acid via the wet process (sulfuric acid digestion), then converted to fertilizers (DAP, MAP, TSP). Phosphorus is unique among critical minerals in being literally irreplaceable: it is an essential element for all life with no biological substitute. The emerging LFP battery market creates a new demand stream for purified phosphoric acid, potentially competing with fertilizer applications for high-grade feedstock. Food security concerns make phosphate supply a matter of geopolitical importance.

Production Geography
Global Phosphate production is led by China, which accounts for approximately 24% of world output, followed by Morocco. Processing and Intermediate Products
Phosphate is primarily sourced from Fluorapatite (Ca5(PO4)3F), Francolite. After extraction, the raw material undergoes multiple processing steps including beneficiation, chemical treatment, and refining to reach the purity levels required by downstream industries. Typical ore grades range from 25-35% P2O5.
