Potash
Supply Chain
Potash Supply Chain: From Mine to Market
Canada is the worlds largest potash producer (~32%), followed by Russia and Belarus. Production uses either conventional underground mining (Saskatchewan, Russia) or solution mining and evaporation (Dead Sea, Utah). The potash market was historically managed by two marketing cartels (Canpotex for Canadian producers, BPC for Belarus/Russia), but this structure collapsed after Uralkalis 2013 exit from BPC. Western sanctions on Belarus (2021) and Russia (2022) disrupted ~30% of global potash export capacity, causing price spikes and food security concerns. Potash is essential for global food production; potassium cannot be substituted in plant nutrition. BHPs $7.5B Jansen project in Saskatchewan will be the first major new mine in decades when it reaches production around 2026.

Production Geography
Global Potash production is led by Canada, which accounts for approximately 32% of world output, followed by Russia. The full list of major producing nations includes Canada, Russia, Belarus, China, Germany. This geographic concentration means that disruptions in key producing regions can have outsized impacts on global supply and pricing.
Extraction Methods
Potash is extracted using the following primary methods:
- Underground conventional mining
- Solution mining
- Solar evaporation (Dead Sea, Utah)
Processing and Intermediate Products
Potash is primarily sourced from Sylvite (KCl), Carnallite (KMgCl3ยท6H2O), Sylvinite (KCl+NaCl). After extraction, the raw material undergoes multiple processing steps including beneficiation, chemical treatment, and refining to reach the purity levels required by downstream industries. Typical ore grades range from 15-30% K2O.
Key Supply Chain Participants
The Potash supply chain involves these major companies:
Nutrien
Worlds largest potash producer, formed from 2018 merger of PotashCorp and Agrium; operates six mines in Saskatchewan
Belaruskali
Belarusian state potash company; historically second-largest exporter but severely impacted by Western sanctions since 2021
K+S AG
Major European potash producer operating the Bethune mine in Saskatchewan and legacy German operations; also produces specialty fertilizers
Mosaic Company
Major potash producer with operations at Esterhazy and Belle Plaine in Saskatchewan and Carlsbad, New Mexico
Supply Chain Vulnerabilities
Key vulnerabilities in the Potash supply chain include concentration of 32% of production in Canada, limited processing capacity diversification, and long lead times for new mining projects. Monitoring these vulnerabilities remains important for supply chain resilience planning.
