Rhodium
Supply Chain
Rhodium Supply Chain: From Mine to Market
Rhodium has the most constrained supply of any precious metal still required in large industrial quantities. Total global production is only ~25 tonnes/year, entirely as a co-product of platinum and palladium mining, primarily in South Africa (~80%). Rhodium cannot be mined independently. The dominant use (~80%) is in three-way catalytic converters for gasoline vehicles, where rhodium uniquely catalyzes the reduction of nitrogen oxides (NOx) to nitrogen and oxygen. No other element can substitute for this function. The supply chain is identical to platinum: South African Bushveld Complex mining, flotation, smelting, base metal refining, and precious metal refining. Rhodiums extreme price volatility reflects the intersection of inelastic supply (linked to platinum mining) and inelastic demand (no substitute in autocatalysts) in a tiny market.

Production Geography
Global Rhodium production is led by South Africa, which accounts for approximately 80% of world output, followed by Russia. The full list of major producing nations includes South Africa, Russia, Zimbabwe, Canada. This geographic concentration means that disruptions in key producing regions can have outsized impacts on global supply and pricing.
Extraction Methods
Rhodium is extracted using the following primary methods:
- Byproduct of platinum/palladium mining
Processing and Intermediate Products
Rhodium is primarily sourced from Merensky Reef, UG2 Chromitite, Platreef. After extraction, the raw material undergoes multiple processing steps including beneficiation, chemical treatment, and refining to reach the purity levels required by downstream industries. Typical ore grades range from Byproduct - ~0.2 g/t in PGM ores.
Key Supply Chain Participants
The Rhodium supply chain involves these major companies:
Anglo American Platinum
Largest rhodium producer globally from Bushveld Complex operations
Impala Platinum
Major rhodium producer as PGM co-product
Sibanye-Stillwater
Significant rhodium producer from South African operations
Johnson Matthey
Major three-way catalyst manufacturer and rhodium refiner; publishes daily rhodium prices
Supply Chain Vulnerabilities
Key vulnerabilities in the Rhodium supply chain include concentration of 80% of production in South Africa, limited processing capacity diversification, and long lead times for new mining projects. The high supply risk rating reflects the severity of these concentration risks and the difficulty of rapidly establishing alternative supply sources.
