Rubidium
Uses & Applications
Applications and End-Uses for Rubidium
Rubidium (Rb) is a medium-criticality specialty metal with annual global production of approximately 4 tonnes. Rubidium is a soft, highly reactive alkali metal used primarily in specialized electronic and research applications. Rubidium atomic frequency standards are used as secondary time references in telecommunications networks and GPS systems. Production is extremely limited, as rubidium is typically recovered as a byproduct of cesium or lithium mining, making it one of the least produced metals globally.

Key Applications
The primary end-uses of Rubidium span multiple sectors. The following applications represent the most significant sources of global demand:
- Atomic frequency standards - Key alternatives include Cesium clocks (higher accuracy), quartz oscillators (lower accuracy). Rubidium clocks are less accurate than cesium but cheaper and more compact; widely used as secondary frequency references in telecom base stations and GPS receivers
- GPS and telecommunications timing - Rubidium is valued in gps and telecommunications timing for its unique physical and chemical properties that are difficult to replicate with alternative materials.
- Biomedical research - Key alternatives include Potassium-42 tracer. Rubidium-82 is used in cardiac PET imaging; potassium tracers serve some overlapping research applications
- Specialty glass and ceramics - Rubidium is valued in specialty glass and ceramics for its unique physical and chemical properties that are difficult to replicate with alternative materials.
Product Forms and Specifications
Rubidium is commercially available in 3 primary product forms, each serving different industrial requirements:
| Product Form | Purity / Grade | Primary Application |
|---|---|---|
| Rubidium chloride | 99.9%+ | Frequency standards, biomedical research |
| Rubidium metal | 99.75%+ | Atomic frequency standards, research |
| Rubidium carbonate | 99%+ | Specialty glass, electronics |
Demand Outlook
Rubidium appears on both the USGS Critical Minerals List and the EU Critical Raw Materials List, underscoring its strategic importance across Western economies. Growing demand from electrification, digitalization, and defense modernization is expected to place additional pressure on the Rubidium supply chain through the end of this decade.
