Ruthenium is produced exclusively as a byproduct of platinum and palladium mining, primarily in South Africa (~85%). The refining process involves distillation of volatile RuO4 during PGM processing. Total global production is ~35 tonnes/year. The dominant commercial application is in hard disk drive manufacturing, where nanometer-thick ruthenium layers enable high-density perpendicular magnetic recording. Ruthenium is also essential for chlor-alkali electrode coatings (DSA technology for chlorine production). Emerging interest in ruthenium as a lower-cost PEM electrolyzer anode catalyst (replacing expensive iridium) could transform the demand profile if technical durability challenges are solved.
