Samarium Supply Chain: From Mine to Market

Samarium follows the standard rare earth supply chain with China producing ~62% of mine output and ~90% of separation capacity. It is found in both bastnasite/monazite (light REE ores) and ion-adsorption clays. The dominant commercial application is in samarium-cobalt permanent magnets (SmCo5 and Sm2Co17), which offer superior high-temperature performance compared to NdFeB magnets. SmCo magnets are critical for military and aerospace applications where operating temperatures exceed 200C (jet engines, missile guidance, satellite systems). The US maintains strategic reserves of SmCo magnets and samarium, and the Defense Production Act has been used to fund domestic SmCo magnet manufacturing capacity at companies like Arnold Magnetic Technologies and EEC.

Production Geography

Global Samarium production is led by China, which accounts for approximately 62% of world output, followed by Myanmar. The full list of major producing nations includes China, Myanmar, Australia, United States. This geographic concentration means that disruptions in key producing regions can have outsized impacts on global supply and pricing.

Extraction Methods

Samarium is extracted using the following primary methods:

  • Byproduct of bastnasite/monazite mining
  • Ion-adsorption clay leaching

Processing and Intermediate Products

Samarium is primarily sourced from Bastnasite, Monazite, Ion-adsorption clays. After extraction, the raw material undergoes multiple processing steps including beneficiation, chemical treatment, and refining to reach the purity levels required by downstream industries. Typical ore grades range from 0.5-2% of REE content.

Key Supply Chain Participants

The Samarium supply chain involves these major companies:

Northern Rare Earths

Producer 600111.SS
China

Major samarium source from Bayan Obo operations

Arnold Magnetic Technologies

Magnet maker
United States

Leading Western manufacturer of SmCo permanent magnets for defense and aerospace

Electron Energy Corporation (EEC)

Magnet maker
United States

US manufacturer of SmCo magnets for military applications; sole domestic source for some defense magnet grades

Shin-Etsu Chemical

Magnet maker 4063.T
Japan

Major producer of both SmCo and NdFeB magnets; SmCo preferred for extreme temperature military applications

Supply Chain Vulnerabilities

Key vulnerabilities in the Samarium supply chain include concentration of 62% of production in China, limited processing capacity diversification, and long lead times for new mining projects. The high supply risk rating reflects the severity of these concentration risks and the difficulty of rapidly establishing alternative supply sources.
