Silicon Supply Chain: From Mine to Market
China dominates the silicon supply chain at every stage: ~75% of metallurgical silicon smelting, ~85% of polysilicon production, ~97% of solar wafer manufacturing, and ~80% of solar cell production. The supply chain runs from quartzite mining through carbothermic reduction (MG-Si), hydrochlorination and Siemens process (polysilicon), crystal growth (Czochralski for mono-Si), slicing (diamond wire sawing), and cell/module fabrication. Chinese polysilicon production is concentrated in Xinjiang and Inner Mongolia where cheap coal-fired electricity is available, raising ESG concerns (forced labor allegations, high carbon footprint). Western polysilicon producers (Wacker, Hemlock, REC) are at a significant cost disadvantage. For semiconductors, the supply chain is separate: ultra-high-purity semiconductor-grade wafers are produced by specialized companies (Shin-Etsu, SUMCO, Siltronic) primarily in Japan, Germany, and South Korea.

Production Geography
Global Silicon production is led by China, which accounts for approximately 75% of world output, followed by Russia. The full list of major producing nations includes China, Russia, Brazil, Norway, United States. This geographic concentration means that disruptions in key producing regions can have outsized impacts on global supply and pricing.
Extraction Methods
Silicon is extracted using the following primary methods:
- Open-pit quartzite mining
- Submerged arc furnace smelting
Processing and Intermediate Products
Silicon is primarily sourced from Quartzite (SiO2), Quartz vein deposits. After extraction, the raw material undergoes multiple processing steps including beneficiation, chemical treatment, and refining to reach the purity levels required by downstream industries. Typical ore grades range from 99%+ SiO2.
Key Supply Chain Participants
The Silicon supply chain involves these major companies:
LONGi Green Energy
Worlds largest monocrystalline silicon wafer and solar cell producer; dominates global solar wafer supply
Tongwei Co
Major Chinese polysilicon producer and solar cell manufacturer
GCL Technology
Major polysilicon producer developing lower-cost FBR (granular) polysilicon technology
Wacker Chemie
Major Western polysilicon producer (Nunchritz, Germany and Charleston, Tennessee); also one of worlds largest silicone manufacturers
Supply Chain Vulnerabilities
Key vulnerabilities in the Silicon supply chain include concentration of 75% of production in China, limited processing capacity diversification, and long lead times for new mining projects. Monitoring these vulnerabilities remains important for supply chain resilience planning.
