Supply Chain
Silver Supply Chain: From Mine to Market
Silver supply comes from primary silver mines (~28%), byproduct of copper/lead/zinc/gold mining (~55%), and recycling (~17%). Mexico is the largest miner (~23%), followed by China, Peru, Chile, and Poland. Unlike gold, silver supply has been essentially flat for a decade as declining ore grades and limited new mine development offset production from existing operations. The demand side is being transformed by solar photovoltaics: silver paste for solar cell metallization now consumes 6,000+ tonnes/year and growing rapidly, making it the largest and fastest-growing industrial application. Each solar panel requires approximately 10-20mg of silver. Industrial demand (solar, electronics, brazing, ethylene oxide catalysts) now exceeds 55% of total demand, with investment and jewelry making up the remainder.

Production Geography
Global Silver production is led by Mexico, which accounts for approximately 23% of world output, followed by China. The full list of major producing nations includes Mexico, China, Peru, Chile, Poland. This geographic concentration means that disruptions in key producing regions can have outsized impacts on global supply and pricing.
Extraction Methods
Silver is extracted using the following primary methods:
- Byproduct of copper, lead, zinc, and gold mining
- Primary silver mining
Processing and Intermediate Products
Silver is primarily sourced from Argentite (Ag2S), Native silver, Silver-bearing galena and chalcopyrite. After extraction, the raw material undergoes multiple processing steps including beneficiation, chemical treatment, and refining to reach the purity levels required by downstream industries. Typical ore grades range from 100-500 g/t (primary); byproduct varies.
Key Supply Chain Participants
The Silver supply chain involves these major companies:
Fresnillo plc
Worlds largest primary silver producer; operates Fresnillo, Saucito, and other mines in Mexico
First Majestic Silver
Major primary silver producer operating mines in Mexico
Pan American Silver
Largest silver mining company by output following 2023 acquisition of Yamana Gold; operations across the Americas
Coeur Mining
US-based precious metals producer with silver-primary mines in Nevada, Alaska, and Mexico
Supply Chain Vulnerabilities
Key vulnerabilities in the Silver supply chain include concentration of 23% of production in Mexico, limited processing capacity diversification, and long lead times for new mining projects. Monitoring these vulnerabilities remains important for supply chain resilience planning.
