Supply Chain
Tungsten Supply Chain: From Mine to Market
China dominates tungsten more completely than almost any other metal: 82% of mine production, ~90% of APT processing, and a dominant share of cemented carbide production. Tungsten ores (wolframite and scheelite) are processed into APT through a multi-step chemical refining process, then reduced to tungsten powder and carburized to tungsten carbide for cutting tool applications. The cemented carbide industry (~55% of tungsten demand) is dominated by Sandvik, Kennametal, Ceratizit, and Chinese producers. Defense applications (tungsten heavy alloy for kinetic energy penetrators) represent a smaller but strategically critical demand segment. Western tungsten production is minimal: Austrials Mittersill mine (WBH) is the only significant European operation, and North America has no active tungsten mines. Almontys Sangdong restart in South Korea is the most advanced project to diversify supply.

Production Geography
Global Tungsten production is led by China, which accounts for approximately 82% of world output, followed by Vietnam. The full list of major producing nations includes China, Vietnam, Russia, Bolivia, Austria. This geographic concentration means that disruptions in key producing regions can have outsized impacts on global supply and pricing.
Extraction Methods
Tungsten is extracted using the following primary methods:
- Underground mining
- Open-pit mining
Processing and Intermediate Products
Tungsten is primarily sourced from Wolframite ((Fe,Mn)WO4), Scheelite (CaWO4). After extraction, the raw material undergoes multiple processing steps including beneficiation, chemical treatment, and refining to reach the purity levels required by downstream industries. Typical ore grades range from 0.3-1.5% WO3.
Key Supply Chain Participants
The Tungsten supply chain involves these major companies:
China Minmetals Corporation
Major Chinese state-owned tungsten producer and trader; one of six designated Chinese tungsten exporters
Xiamen Tungsten
Major Chinese tungsten producer and cemented carbide manufacturer; vertically integrated from mining to cutting tools
Sandvik
Worlds largest cemented carbide cutting tool manufacturer through its Sandvik Machining Solutions division
Kennametal
Major US cemented carbide tooling company; significant consumer of tungsten carbide powder
Supply Chain Vulnerabilities
Key vulnerabilities in the Tungsten supply chain include concentration of 82% of production in China, limited processing capacity diversification, and long lead times for new mining projects. The high supply risk rating reflects the severity of these concentration risks and the difficulty of rapidly establishing alternative supply sources.
