Yttrium (Y) is a high-criticality rare earth element with annual global production of approximately 8,000 tonnes REO. Yttrium is classified with the rare earth elements due to similar chemical properties and co-occurrence in the same ore deposits. It is essential for yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG) lasers, LED phosphors, and yttria-stabilized zirconia used in thermal barrier coatings for jet engines and solid oxide fuel cells. Yttrium was the first rare earth element to be discovered and remains among the most commercially important.

Key Applications
The primary end-uses of Yttrium span multiple sectors. The following applications represent the most significant sources of global demand:
- LED and display phosphors - Key alternatives include No practical substitute for white LED phosphor host. Cerium-doped YAG is the universal phosphor in white LED lighting; virtually every white LED uses YAG:Ce phosphor; no alternative provides equivalent performance
- Yttria-stabilized zirconia ceramics - Yttrium is valued in yttria-stabilized zirconia ceramics for its unique physical and chemical properties that are difficult to replicate with alternative materials.
- Superconductor materials - Key alternatives include Bismuth strontium calcium copper oxide (BSCCO). YBCO (RE-123) tape offers superior performance in magnetic fields; BSCCO wire is easier to manufacture but less capable; both contain rare earths
- Laser crystals (YAG) - Key alternatives include Fiber lasers (Yb-doped), diode-pumped solid state alternatives. Nd:YAG is being partially displaced by fiber lasers in some applications but remains dominant for pulsed laser marking, welding, and medical lasers
- Jet engine thermal coatings - Yttrium is valued in jet engine thermal coatings for its unique physical and chemical properties that are difficult to replicate with alternative materials.
