Zinc
Supply Chain
Zinc Supply Chain: From Mine to Market
China is the largest zinc miner (~33%) and the dominant smelter/refiner (~45% of refined output). Australia (Glencore), Peru, India (Hindustan Zinc), and the US (Teck Red Dog) are other major mining sources. Zinc concentrate is processed via the roast-leach-electrowin (RLE) process, which is electricity-intensive. The dominant end-use is galvanizing (~60% of demand), where zinc coatings protect steel from corrosion. Construction and infrastructure are the primary demand sectors. Zinc smelting generates important byproducts: indium, germanium, cadmium, and sulfuric acid are all recovered during zinc processing. The 2022 European energy crisis exposed zinc smeltings vulnerability to electricity prices, with multiple European smelters curtailing production by 50%+ due to uneconomic energy costs.

Production Geography
Global Zinc production is led by China, which accounts for approximately 33% of world output, followed by Peru. The full list of major producing nations includes China, Peru, Australia, India, United States. This geographic concentration means that disruptions in key producing regions can have outsized impacts on global supply and pricing.
Extraction Methods
Zinc is extracted using the following primary methods:
- Open-pit mining
- Underground mining
Processing and Intermediate Products
Zinc is primarily sourced from Sphalerite (ZnS), Smithsonite (ZnCO3), Hemimorphite. After extraction, the raw material undergoes multiple processing steps including beneficiation, chemical treatment, and refining to reach the purity levels required by downstream industries. Typical ore grades range from 3-15% Zn.
Key Supply Chain Participants
The Zinc supply chain involves these major companies:
Korea Zinc
Worlds largest zinc smelter by capacity; also recovers indium, germanium, and other byproducts from zinc concentrates
Glencore
One of worlds largest zinc miners; operates major mines in Australia (Mount Isa, McArthur River), Kazakhstan, Peru, and Canada
Hindustan Zinc (Vedanta)
Indias largest and worlds second-largest integrated zinc producer; operates mines in Rajasthan
Teck Resources
Major zinc producer through Red Dog mine in Alaska (one of worlds largest zinc mines) and Trail smelter in British Columbia
Supply Chain Vulnerabilities
Key vulnerabilities in the Zinc supply chain include concentration of 33% of production in China, limited processing capacity diversification, and long lead times for new mining projects. Monitoring these vulnerabilities remains important for supply chain resilience planning.
